The Lighthouse
“A Place to Shine”
Welcome to the Lighthouse at Alton Middle School! The Lighthouse is located on the second floor of the Annex building at the middle school campus. It consists of approximately 250 seventh and eighth grade students with 13 teachers and numerous support staff working daily to provide a quality education to the students of The Lighthouse.
The Lighthouse prides itself on being “a place to shine”. Here students are given opportunities to engage in challenging, relevant curriculum through the use of various teaching strategies designed to meet their diverse needs and make the learning more meaningful to them as individuals. Our teachers also incorporate several interdisciplinary units and special projects into the curriculum throughout the year which include a career unit, the Holocaust, International Week, and an Explorers Wax Museum to name just a few. Students love these non-traditional opportunities for learning and thrive to excel and meet the high expectations set for them by their teachers. In addition to opportunities provided to our students within our house, a majority of our students also participate in several of the academic and non-academic campus activities such as athletics, 21st Century, tutoring, Student Council, National Junior Honor Society, Peer Leadership, Young Authors, Geography Bee, Spelling Bee, special interest clubs, and a variety of musical events. Student success is our priority, and because we value working with young adolescents, The Lighthouse staff is prepared to provide a school climate that is student centered and designed to meet the social, emotional, and academic needs of all our students.
By creating an inviting, supportive, and safe environment, the students and staff of The Lighthouse are proud to call our house “home”. Over our three short years of existence, our academic scores have improved and our discipline has decreased making The Lighthouse truly “a place to shine”. Yet, all of this could not have been accomplished without the hard work and dedication of both our students and staff along with the support of our parents, the district, and the community. We will continue to make you proud!
